One of Australia's largest consulting firms is changing how it recruits new staff. PwC now places more value on people-focused traits such as ethical judgement, curiosity and teamwork instead of relying heavily on traditional numerical aptitude. This adjustment reflects the rising influence of artificial intelligence in managing data-heavy tasks, freeing human employees to address more complex, people-oriented challenges.

Previously known for prioritising accounting and commerce qualifications, PwC is now open to candidates from a broader mix of academic backgrounds including arts and law. The company, which employs 6,700 people, is introducing AI tools into its workflow while also investing in human-focused skills through a combination of online learning and in-person evaluation.

The hiring process has been updated as well. Rather than being centred around test scores, applicants now take part in interactive assessments that measure their capacity to collaborate, think critically and engage effectively with others. AI handles a large part of the initial screening, but candidates also complete simulations intended to showcase soft skills that technology cannot replicate.

This approach is part of a wider strategy to prepare the workforce for the future. More than 200 advisory partners have already finished in-depth AI training programs. PwC is aiming to develop a team capable of both using and questioning AI-generated insights. Even staff with many years of experience are being encouraged to adopt new digital tools, making adaptability as important as technical knowledge.

As the integration of human skills and AI continues, the distinction between traditional roles and tech-driven jobs is becoming less clear. This shift is reshaping PwC and influencing the types of qualities that companies are increasingly seeking in the workforce of the future.
