Google Launches Tougher Foldable to Compete with Samsung

Google has introduced the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, a new premium foldable phone that takes direct aim at Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Rather than focusing on a slim profile, Google has prioritised strength and integrated AI performance. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold features a reinforced hinge and outer shell and achieves an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. This makes it the most rugged foldable currently available, though the added protection increases its weight to 258 grams. When folded, the Pixel measures 10.8mm thick compared with Samsung’s Fold 7 at 215 grams and 8.9mm. For users who prize portability, this could be a decisive factor.

True to Google's tradition of using Pixel devices to lead its Android software vision, the 10 Pro Fold arrives with Android 16 and promises seven years of updates. It features tight integration with AI-driven tools like Gemini, which can extract context from screenshots and enable features such as syncing flight information across email and calendar apps. The experience remains close to stock Android, making it a strong option for Apple users open to switching.

The phone includes a 48MP wide camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide lens and a 10.8MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom with digital zoom up to 20x. Image quality holds up well in low light, supported by Google's computational photography. While Samsung’s camera captures slightly sharper shots of the moon and uses higher-end Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, its device only holds an IP48 dust rating, falling short of Google’s more rugged build.

The outer display on Google’s foldable is a little wider but shorter than Samsung’s, with both measuring around 6.4 to 6.5 inches. Unlike Samsung’s efficient LTPO AMOLED screen, Google’s version lacks adaptive refresh rate capabilities. Internally, both handsets feature 8-inch displays and can run two apps side by side, though Samsung supports more concurrent apps on screen, offering better functionality for power users.

In the end, the decision hinges on user preference. Buyers who prioritise strength and dust or water resistance may lean towards Google’s tougher, less expensive device. Those who value slimness and more advanced multitasking will likely prefer Samsung's Fold 7.
