MinRes Flags Successor But Keeps Boss On

Mineral Resources signals it is preparing for life after its long-time boss even as the company’s powerful leader shows no sign of exiting soon.

Mineral Resources is quietly setting up a leadership transition, elevating its new chief operating officer as a likely heir yet offering no timetable for a change at the top.

The diversified miner frames the promotion of long-serving executive Darren Killeen as part of a broader fix to its heavily criticised governance practices.

After admitting to wrongdoing that hurt shareholders and taxpayers, the founder previously pledged in late 2024 to give up the managing director role within 18 months.

An ethics and governance committee was created to oversee his conduct and clamp down on related-party dealings, but a later decision by the new chair removed that deadline as the share price surged fourfold in a year.

In a fresh investor presentation released on Monday, the Perth-based group does not restate any departure date for its managing director even though the document will anchor meetings with investors this week.

The update focuses on tightening governance, promising to end related-party arrangements and stamp out misuse of corporate assets after a string of scandals tied to the founder and in some cases his family members.

Killeen stepped into the newly created chief operating officer position in May and has spent about 17 years inside the business, which spans mining services, lithium and iron ore operations.

Mineral Resources outlines a formal succession process that it says is open to all contenders but makes clear its preference leans strongly towards an insider.

The company argues that promoting from within fits the specialised way it runs its mining services, lithium and iron ore portfolio, describing the business and operating model as unusually complex.

That language, paired with Killeen’s elevation and long tenure, points investors toward him as the natural frontrunner even as the current managing director consolidates his position.
