Qantas Cuts Fares As New Jets Arrive

Qantas is courting budget-conscious travellers, slashing some regional fares below $100 just as its domestic punctuality hits a nine-year high.

The airline’s latest round of discounts targets regional leisure corridors, with one-way economy fares cut to $99 on Adelaide-Kangaroo Island and $105 on Sydney-Ballina. Prices fall to $125 on several other key links, including Brisbane-Port Macquarie, Melbourne-Gold Coast and Perth-Geraldton, in a broader push to stimulate demand beyond the capital cities.

Qantas posts its strongest domestic on-time performance in nine years for April, landing nearly 86% of flights according to internal figures. Rival Virgin Australia trails that result, recording 83.4% of domestic flights arriving on schedule over the same period.

The airline leans heavily on fleet renewal to reset customer perceptions on domestic services. More travellers now step onto aircraft with quieter cabins, cleaner operations and interiors that still feel factory fresh, instead of the tired cabins that drew criticism in previous years.

Qantas has already taken delivery of six A321XLR jets, a long-range variant of the Airbus narrowbody family tailored to both domestic and nearby international routes. A seventh A321XLR sits in the final stages of assembly in Toulouse, France, continuing the steady pace of deliveries feeding into the local network.
