Racing Victoria Faces Workplace Dispute Before Cup

Racing Victoria is facing workplace bullying allegations from its top veterinarian, bringing tension to the Melbourne Cup just days before the event.

The organisation, responsible for overseeing horse racing in Victoria, is under scrutiny following claims made by its senior veterinarian. These claims allege internal pressure was applied to permit high-risk international racehorses to compete despite veterinary concerns. The issue has come to light through a legal filing with the Fair Work Commission and has raised concerns about the sport's internal safety culture.

The dispute centres on allegations that Racing Victoria's health protocols were internally challenged. The situation reportedly began with a meeting in April, where the veterinarian was allegedly encouraged to adopt a "more flexible" approach to assessments. This came after a number of horses were withdrawn from last year’s Cup, which had drawn attention from stakeholders and led to efforts to relax evaluations to allow more international entries.

There are 10 international competitors among the 24 horses in the current Melbourne Cup field, with each horse undergoing rigorous checks including two mandatory veterinary exams and CT scans. Racing Victoria insists it upholds strict, leading welfare standards within the industry and has already withdrawn several horses on veterinary advice, including a leading contender. The organisation continues to firmly reject any suggestion that animal welfare has been compromised.

As the legal proceedings progress, the case highlights broader concerns about how sporting bodies address internal disputes, especially where health and safety are involved. While the Melbourne Cup remains Australia's most iconic racing event, the situation points to an ongoing conflict between commercial pressures and the importance of animal welfare.
