Ventia taps OpenAI to overhaul operations

Ventia is betting that generative AI can streamline some of the most complex parts of its infrastructure services operations, from hazardous field work to high stakes contract bids. The ASX-listed group is partnering with OpenAI to trial new applications across safety, asset management, field operations, customer service and internal support, extending beyond the usual office use cases.

OpenAI is not revealing any commercial terms, but the tie up marks a serious push to embed AI deeply inside one of Australasia’s largest essential services providers.

Ventia’s workforce will gain access to ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI’s API platform, giving teams company wide tools to prototype and deploy AI solutions faster. The company, valued at more than $5 billion on the ASX, wants to shrink the time it takes to move ideas from concept to production ready systems.

Ventia is also working with OpenAI-owned consulting firm Tomoro.ai to build a bid management capability designed to lift proposal quality, accelerate response times and improve win rates on major contracts. Early testing used OpenAI’s Codex coding tool to create a supply partner portal, showing how automation could touch both procurement and front line delivery.

Engineers are now exploring how these systems can help beyond corporate functions, particularly for field teams that handle maintenance, inspections and repairs. Ventia plans to extend AI tools to more than 15,000 field workers, aiming to reduce administrative load so technicians spend less time on forms and more on actual work.

Potential uses include AI assistance for incident reporting, work order processing or real time information retrieval in remote locations. OpenAI describes the collaboration as a way to bring advanced AI into the day to day routines of essential service crews, not just head office staff.

Heavy industry and infrastructure operators are emerging as the next wave of AI adopters after early uptake in software and finance. If Ventia’s bid management and field tools deliver measurable improvements, its model could influence how other utilities, transport and infrastructure groups deploy AI across large, distributed workforces.
