Mining group Rio Tinto reported USD6.66 billion (AUD9.5 billion) in net profit after tax for the half year, a 47% increase from a year earlier.

Investors responded quickly, pushing the stock up 5.2% to AUD167 by 10:50am AEST.

Profit growth comes as the company benefits from stronger prices across several key commodities rather than a single driver.

Management points to a broad rally in metal prices as the core engine of the result.

Benchmark copper prices climbed 39%, giving a major lift to revenue from one of Rio Tinto’s key growth segments.

Gold prices advanced 53% while aluminium prices rose 33%, further fattening margins across the portfolio.

Shifts in pricing feed directly into the group’s earnings power over the half year.

Rio Tinto’s leadership also stresses that portfolio diversification is smoothing earnings and unlocking new growth.

Copper, aluminium and lithium together now account for more than 50% of group underlying EBITDA, signalling a gradual pivot away from an overreliance on any single commodity.

The mix highlights the company’s growing exposure to materials tied to electrification and energy transition.
