Unspoken Rules
The Unspoken Rules is all about the things no one really teaches you, but you’re somehow expected to know and rarely explained. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back!
How to build resilience at work 🧘♀️
Week 4 is here, which means midterms, deadlines and probably a few things not going quite to plan. Whether it’s a mark you’re disappointed with or a week where everything feels a bit much, learning how to bounce back is a skill that’ll help you well beyond uni.
Setbacks are normal: Missed promotions, tough feedback and unexpected changes happen in every career.
Resilience is how you respond: It helps you recover, adapt and keep moving when things don’t go to plan.
See challenges differently: Instead of getting stuck on what went wrong, focus on what you can learn or change next time.
Get comfortable with change: New technology, new managers and changing responsibilities are easier to handle when you’re willing to adapt.
Take feedback without spiralling: Listen to what was said, work out what’s useful and use it to improve.
Know how you react under pressure: Being aware of your emotions can help you respond rather than react immediately.
Networking isn’t about being outgoing
Most people think networking is just about talking when it's about listening and asking the right questions. Most people show up last minute with the same surface-level stuff ("So what do you do?" or "How's your day been?"), and then you look like every other uni student. Look up who you're meeting beforehand, see what they've worked on or posted about, and write down what you actually want from the conversation. Yes it might ultimately be a job, but nobody hires you right off of a coffee chat. That first meeting is about understanding how they got into their role, what a graduate year in their team looks like, or what they wish they'd known at uni. Once you know what you're after, the right questions become obvious, and you walk in with intention instead of hoping something useful comes up.
The real giveaway, though, are your follow-up questions. People can tell almost straight away whether you're genuinely interested or just working through a list. If someone mentions they switched from law into consulting, most students will nod and jump to their next question. The right move is to ask, "What made you take that leap?" Follow-ups show you're actually listening and thinking about their answers, and that's what people remember. You don't need to be the most confident or outgoing person in the room. Being prepared and present will make a much stronger impression than any polished elevator pitch.

Best advice you’ve actually used?
“You are the greatest project you will ever work on.” This piece of advice reminds me to pour into myself and do what genuinely makes me happy. Everyone’s version of a fulfilling life looks different so I’ve learnt not to be too quick to conform to what the people around me are doing. I think it’s important to stay true to yourself, your interests and what you actually enjoy, rather than changing them based on other people’s opinions.
Did you know?
Event management is mostly planning and coordination, with only a small part of the job happening on the day. Most of your time goes into planning everything beforehand, from budgets and venues to suppliers, catering and run sheets. You'll also manage client expectations and handle last-minute changes. On event days the hours are long and you're on your feet, fixing problems as they come up. You could be working on anything from corporate conferences and product launches to weddings, festivals or sporting events. The role suits people who are highly organised, stay calm under pressure and communicate clearly. Volunteering at events or helping run a uni society event is a practical way to test whether it's a good fit.
