Qantas slashes fares on 1.4m domestic seats

Qantas is rolling out a fresh domestic airfare blitz, putting pressure on rivals as consumer confidence and forward travel demand look increasingly fragile.

Qantas confirms the sale comes less than two months after its previous domestic promotion, showing how quickly it is returning to discounting to fill planes. The carrier says 1.4 million economy seats are discounted for travel between July 22 and May 23 2027, a window that captures several peak periods. Included are major holiday dates such as Christmas 2026 and Easter 2027, although only on selected routes.

Some of the sharpest deals sit on regional and leisure-heavy routes, where price sensitivity is highest and competition has intensified. The move is targeted at stimulating demand over a long horizon rather than just plugging short-term gaps.

The lowest advertised fare is $105 between Sydney and Ballina Byron Bay, a key gateway for northern NSW beach getaways. Travellers can also find $119 one-way fares on Brisbane-Newcastle and Melbourne-Launceston services, placing pressure on competitors on those sectors.

Qantas is also promoting $149 seats on Sydney-Dubbo, Brisbane-Mackay and Canberra-Melbourne routes, spreading discounts across both business and leisure markets.
