Strategy consulting is the work most commerce students picture when they hear “consulting” but very few actually end up doing. Strategy consultants advise CEOs and boards on their biggest decisions - whether to enter a new market, acquire a competitor, restructure a division or rethink their entire business model. The firms are McKinsey, BCG and Bain (MBB) at the top, followed by strategy practices within the Big 4 and specialist boutiques like L.E.K., Kearney and Oliver Wyman. The interview process is unlike any other grad application. You’ll face multiple rounds of case interviews where you’re handed a business problem on the spot and expected to structure your thinking, do the maths and land on a recommendation in 30 minutes. Most candidates prepare for months. The hours are long, the travel can be heavy and the up-or-out model means you’re either getting promoted or getting counselled towards the door. But the exit opportunities after two to three years are as good as it gets in corporate Australia. Former strategy consultants fill corporate strategy, private equity, venture capital and C-suite roles across every industry. If you’re targeting MBB, start case prep now, network with current consultants through your university’s consulting society and apply during the penultimate year internship window. The cohorts are tiny and most offers come through the summer internship pipeline.
