Do you actually need a cover letter?

Short answer is only if they ask for one. If the application portal says cover letter required, attach one. If it doesn't, you can skip it for the roles you're applying to in bulk. Where it should make a difference is for the handful of jobs you actually care about. A tailored cover letter for a role you want, where you can say something specific about why this company and why this team, can be the thing that differentiates you. The key word is tailored. If you're writing one generic letter and swapping out the company name at the top and AI is writing your reason for “why this team”, you're wasting your time and the recruiter can tell.

The reason most cover letters get ignored now is because they all sound identical. AI has made it incredibly easy to produce a perfectly structured, completely forgettable half page that says nothing your resume doesn't already say. Recruiters who read hundreds of applications a day can tell immediately. If you're going to write one, keep it to half a page, say something your resume can't and make it obvious you've read the job ad properly. Check the company name. Check the file name. It sounds basic but "Cover Letter - Deloitte" attached to a PwC application is an instant rejection.

What’s a lesson that’s stuck with you recently?

If you want a community, you need to be a villager. Show up for your friends and inconvenience yourself sometimes, even in small ways, whether that means staying back after class to catch the LR together or coming into uni just to catch up. Those little moments mean so much.

Did you know?

Marketing ops is the behind-the-scenes side of marketing. You might manage the CRM, set up email automations, segment audiences, clean up customer data and track which campaigns are actually bringing in revenue. Things like an automatic welcome email after you sign up, or a sales rep being notified when someone keeps visiting a pricing page, are usually set up by a marketing ops team.

The role sits somewhere between marketing, data and technology, so you'll spend a lot more time working with systems and numbers than designing campaigns or writing content. Marketing and information systems are both common ways in, especially if you enjoy the technical side of how marketing actually works.
